Supply Chain Consulting

SMT’s supply chain improvement methodology delivers a continuous flow of materials through the supply chain at the lowest cost. The outcomes are shorter lead times, better delivery performance and higher logistics productivity.

SMT’s methodology combines the best of ‘Lean’ thinking with the focusing power of Theory of Constraints. By focusing on the few constraints to improve performance, we make sure valuable resources are not wasted on disparate, incremental and unfocused improvement initiatives. SMT’s methodology yields rapid payback in lower stocks, service performance and shorter lead time.

In a service driven business environment, competitive advantage is gained by quick response to markets and lean inventory strategies. SMT’s supply chain design methods and enabling technologies deliver these winning strategies.

We implement quickly, and deliver cash and commercial benefits immediately. For our typical project, the SMT approach delivers inventory reductions of over 40% with almost perfect service levels – all at lower overall logistics cost

The Methodologies, Technologies and Tools that we use

The SMT Supply Chain Consulting process has various components:

Supply Chain Review

SMT’s initial engagement with a client is to conduct a Supply Chain Review.

This involves an in-depth analysis of the supply chain and logistics processes undertaken by the client and the business environment and markets in which it operates.

SMT works closely with the client staff, we analyse supply chain data, review operating policies and quantify logistics performance. We identify the constraints to supply chain performance improvement. We work with the management team to identity performance goals and specify the new operational capabilities needed to deliver results. SMT’s Supply Chain Reviews take a long term strategic view but also identify actions needed for ‘quick wins’. SMT delivers the recommendations of its Supply Chain Review as an Implementation Action Plan

.

We aim to complete a supply chain review within 4-8 weeks.

Implementation

SMT’s Implementation Action Plan focuses on breaking supply chain constraints and eliminating waste.

Implementation recognises that supply chain improvement requires a combination of two elements – technology and change management. SMT implementations invariably contain the adoption of supply chain technology solutions to drive better performance. But we also deploy change management programs to make sure management policy and rules keep pace with the new systems, and staff members engage in their new roles and tasks working within the new technology environment.
